"Home is Where the Vote Is" Campaign
For more information visit: Home is Where the Vote Is
The “Home is Where the Vote Is,” campaign gives voice to the underwater voter-- a key voting bloc in the United States. Nationally, there are 16 million underwater homes, worth $2.8 trillion, that are $1.2 trillion underwater. Resetting those mortgages to fair market value would save the average underwater homeowner $543 per month, pumping $104 billion into the national economy every year. This would create 1.5 million jobs nationally. Neither President Obama nor Governor Romney has proposed bold solutions needed to address the housing crisis at the root of the American economy’s troubles. Homeowners, and our entire economy, will benefit overwhelmingly from resetting mortgages to fair market value. Economists from both sides of the political spectrum support it. With this solution, we can fix the housing crisis, create jobs and reset the economy. The goal of the campaign is to elevate the stories and power of underwater voters to the level that the campaigns will be forced to address this critical issue.

NM SENATORS, ATTORNEY GENERAL, AND CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS RALLY FOR NEW MEXICO HOME OWNERS

NM CAFE Volunteer, Mick Smith
January 25, 2012, SANTA FE, NM - Today nearly 60 people, Senators, Representatives from Central and Southern New Mexico gathered in the rotunda of the state capitol to encourage legislation this session that would re-instate due diligence for foreclosure practices in New Mexico. SB1 and SB75 sponsored by Senators Michael Sanchez and Stephen Fischmann respectively would provide more options and time for homeowners to negotiate with their banks and stay in their homes. The Press Conference and day of meeting with legislators was organized by the Faith-Based group Communities in Action & Faith (CAFe) and Partnership for Community Action. "We appreciate the Governor placing foreclosure legislation on the call and believe that through this message she recognizes the economy won't get better until we address foreclosures in our state." stated associate director of Partnership for Community Action, Javier MartinezSenator Fischmann, who is sponsoring SB75, said the following, "Nothing hurts families more than foreclosures...there is nothing we can do better for our economy than stopping foreclosures." Senator Fischmann represents parts of Las Cruces where foreclosures are at an all time high. Allen Sanchez, Executive Director for the New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops, called on the Legislature to hear homeowners and to not "Close the Doors" on those families facing foreclosure. "The Bishops stand with you," he told homeowners and supporters in the audience. Assistant Attorney General, Karen Meyers, explained that in the Attorney Generals office they were, "painfully aware of the experience people face" and are "thrilled that CAFe is pushing this issue". The rotunda was silenced however, by Las Cruces homeowner Rose Ann Vasquez, who talked about finding a job after being unemployed for over 4 months and trying to pay Bank of America, "They won't take my payments" because of the ongoing and complex process the bank has had her in for nearly 7 months. "The moral question for our legislators and our community institutions, is who will you stand with in this fight for families? Will you stand with David or Goliath?"Community organizations will continue to organize homeowners and push for the passage of Foreclosure legislation through the end of this year's session.
